New items – Extra Tiny Colors

Brand new extra tiny colors hoops. There hoops are all done in sterling silver (we will make them in plated if you prefer, just message for a listing) with a tiny color wrap on them. They aren’t wrapped like our other colors hoops, they have just a touch of color! If you want them wrapped with the full wrap you can add that in the notes to seller when you purchase. These are super fun, made in 20 gauge and you can mix and match colors. We prefer not to do these in 22 gauge but we will upon special request. These are fun and flirty earrings, I hope everyone loves them and gets tons of wear out of them!

Changes Changes Changes

Hi All It has been awhile since I have posted any blogs. I have been busy up to my eyeballs with new creations! In the very near future I will be un-veiling the new items and in the midst of the new items being posted I will be deleting many as well. I have little fondness for necklaces at this point and time and have decided to do away with most of them. My own designs will remain and will possibly go through an evolutionary phase. All the necklaces are now on sale on etsy and if you have had a desire for one of them I would suggest purchasing soon, when they are deleted they are gone for good! In the future I will probably bring necklaces back but they will be completely different than they are now! Stay tooned for the new additions I think you will all love them!

New Addition ~ Brass Hoops!

Brass is a very pretty metal that looks very much like gold, without the cost. It will tarnish and does need upkeep, cleaning and polishing and it has the ability to turn the skin green much like copper does. The reason? Brass is 85% copper and 15% zinc. Other names for brass are Merlins Gold, NuGold and Jewelr’s Bronze. We are now introducing a line of brass hoops. If your looking for something that you can put in and leave in for extended periods of time or you have an acidic system brass will probably turn green pretty quickly on you. If you can wear brass with a minimal of trouble (some people can) then brass will work well for you! Listings of brass hoops will begin soon!

When will my order ship?

We ship pretty much everyday, except Sunday! For instance all orders received during the day Monday and Monday night get packed and taken to the post office on Tuesday morning. All orders that are placed Tuesday day and night will go out Wednesday morning. This is to ensure fast delivery of your items! If you’re in the US you should get your package within a couple days, at times it takes a week but not too often. If it’s been a week and you haven’t received your package it is possibly lost, please contact us!

International orders take a week and in some cases more time. UK shipments seem to take about 2 weeks to receive, I’m not sure if it is a slow postal system or a customs issue? If your in the UK and it’s been a week don’t worry it will arrive.

When we ship we use paypal shipping. It’s important to have your paypal information up to date or it will ship to the last address you put into paypal.

Copper Earrings

Copper is a beautiful metal!! It is high maintenance though. Some people can wear copper without too much trouble, others not so much! Copper reacts to a persons body chemistry and on some people it is slow to tarnish, on other people it is quick to tarnish and requires a lot of cleaning. We make a lot of copper hoops because the metal itself is so pretty. We wanted to let you know that copper requires regular cleaning and polishing. No matter how tarnished it gets it will polish back up to a beautiful shine but you will probably have to clean it often as well as your ear because when copper tarnishes it will turn your skin green! If you want copper but have trouble with tarnishing we recommend the sterling silver hoops with the copper accent. You will still have to clean them pretty regular but they wont turn your ear green!

Hoop Sizes

The decision to make a medium little hoop has changed. The photo to the left shows the sizes of the hoops we make. We have made the extra tiny hoops just a tad bigger because some people had problems with getting them in. We can still make them in the older size but they will be expanded just a bit so that they can be enjoyed by all.

Please remember not all ear lobes are the same size and not all ears are the same thickness. It is possible that extra tiny hoops won’t fit everyone, just like not all size 10′s fit everybody! We do take returns and we do exchanges and we make every attempt to make sure you are happy with your purchase!

Doing Dangles Different

Dangles are now listed on etsy and we are working on the web page we have decided to do both actually! We will continue to offer some hoops with dangles as well as a large selection of dangles you can purchase separately. We are currently working on offering all metals in dangles, this is a long hard process but we are making progress daily! Thank you for your support!

We are in the process of changing dangles. Eventually they will be listed separate from the hoops. We have started this transition already but it will take some time to change them all over. Dangles will now be sold in their own listing so you can decide which hoops you would like and which dangles! As well as how many dangles etc. Mix and match colors and types as often as you like! In the near future we will be listing gemstones in basic colors, clear quartz and gold will be the main colors although at times we may through some other colors in! Please let us know what you think of the changes and if there is anything else you would like to see in the line!

A few other changes that are coming is we will no longer be making “normal” earrings. Most have been listed at 1/2 off until they are sold out. Eyeglass Chains might be going as well. That part is undecided but many changes are coming in 2011!!

New Itty Bitty Hoops Series

They are available in 14k gold filled and sterling silver with silver accent. About Gauges and Fit of Hoop Earrings

There are different gauges to metals and earrings. Just like there are different shoe sizes and clothing sizes. There are also different ear sizes and different piercings. So many variables!!

So how do you know what gauge and size is right for you?

Sometimes when a piercer does a piercing they will tell you the gauge they are using by asking you a series of questions about the type of jewelry you want to wear. Since we are excited about getting the piercing we are usually answering the questions without listening to the gauge, unless we are looking for a specific gauge or look. To keep fit simple we will talk about the gauge and then the diameter of the hoop.

20 Gauge French Ear Wire

A normal ear wire, french type, that comes on many dangle earrings is a 20 gauge. Some commercial ear wires are 21 gauge. Not a big difference between the two. Our extra tiny hoops are 20 gauge much the same as a typical ear wire and gauge wise will fit most ears.

Our Itty Bitty Hoops Collection are 18 gauge and in a freshly pierced hole will fit snug and you may have to put a little force in inserting it.We make our earrings in 18 gauge because most people prefer the look of the thicker hoop. For those who wish to have 20 gauge we will make any of our 18 gauge earrings in 20 gauge at no extra charge all you need to do is put in the “notes to seller on the invoice a request to make them in 20 gauge. RARELY do we ever make 22 gauge or even have requests so we don’t stock 22 gauge material and will make them on a special order basis with about a week lead time.

Gauges are reversed, in other words, 18 gauge is bigger than 20 gauge, 22 gauge is smaller and 24 gauge is smaller again. So the smaller the gauge number the larger the wire. Smallest to largest would look something like this 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 14 etc. 14 being the thickest of all the number listed.

Now about fit: The fit of the hoop depends on the thickness or depth of the lobe of the ear. You can usually tell pretty close if a hoop will fit a hole by placing a ruler against the ear and looking at the distance between the hole and the bottom of the lobe. My photos are a bit difficult to see but in this photo you can see that there is clearly 1/4″ with some room to spare on this hole, so extra tiny hoop will most likely fit this hole and it does, this is the display I use to show extra tiny hoops

This hole is iffy for extra tiny hoops (1/4″) and I do use this for display and they do fit though the fit is “tight” For me I have 2 holes on the side of the ear that are a tighter fit than my other holes because of the shape of the ear and they way they were pierced. I can fit the extra tiny hoops into this hole and I do wear them though the fit is tighter than my other holes.

In this photo its REALLY clear that a 1/4″ hoop won’t fit into this hole but a 1/2″ will and again this is the display I use to show “fit” on the Itty Bitty Hoops Collection.

Metals We Use for Little Hoop Earrings

Silver Plated: is a less expensive wire that we use for hoop earrings and other items to keep the cost down on the finished product and in most cases for intricate design work where sterling silver would tarnish and be problematic to care for. It is a bit softer and therefore easier to work with and easier to get into the ear. It is a copper based wire with silver plating over the top and we have found a brand that we just LOVE! It keeps its sheen nicely and doesn’t wear or tarnish like other wires I have used. The down side of silver plating is that it contains nickle and some people can have an allergic reaction to nickle products. If you notice itching, redness or irritation remove the earrings and try to avoid purchasing silver plated earrings in the future. If your unsure if you have a nickle sensitivity I would recommend going to sterling silver instead of silver plated.

Sterling Silver: There are different sterling silvers and then there is “fine silver” currently we use sterling silver. Sterling silver is 80-95% silver with a 5-20% copper fill.

14k Gold Filled: We use a 14/20 Gold Filled wire. The fill is copper and zinc and we have found this wire to be the best when it comes to wear. In fact I have yet to see this wire change even after a year of wearing it daily!

10k/14k/18k Gold: all are a combination of many metals. Gold, Silver, Copper, Nickle and Zinc.

24k is a solid metal
